Coun Martin Smith has slammed the County Council because the expensive electronic signs put up around town are STILL not working – up to 18 months after their installation. Just a few weeks ago County engineers promised that the signs would be working in time for Christmas. But Burnley Council’s Executive Member for the local economy, Lib Dem Coun Martin Smith, said action was needed because those responsible were wasting tax payers’ money. |

Coun Smith said, “Once more, the town’s County Councillors have let the residents of Burnley down, in particular County Coun Tony Martin, who has allowed the commissioning of these signs to drift. Preston has had electronic information signs on approaches into the town centre for several years now. Why do our County Councillors not do something for Burnley and Padiham, instead of wasting our tax payers’ money?”
Burnley newsagent Mr Arif Khan said that the some parts of the town were in need of investment to bring people into shops, but he said that to waste money like this was a “scandal”.
Mr Khan said, “After so long, after so many promises, these signs are still wasting space at the side of the town’s major roads. The Christmas shopping season is all but over. It would be better if Burnley Council were put in charge of this. The County Council in Preston lets us down so often people expect it now. ”
The signs are now not expected to be active until the New Year.
