Nick Clegg was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats on 18 December 2007:

Nick Clegg 20,988
Chris Huhne 20,477

On his election Nick said,

“I want to thank the Liberal Democrats for giving me the chance to lead our great party. It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Paddy Ashdown, Charles Kennedy and Ming Campbell, who have all contributed so much to our party. I look forward to working with them all during my leadership.

Nick Clegg, the new Lib Dem Leader, with fellow Leadership contestant Chris Huhne

“I would also like to pay tribute to both Vince Cable and Chris Huhne. Vince has
been an inspiration as stand-in leader with both his forensic questioning and his memorable put downs. Chris and I saw a lot of each other during the leadership contest. Now we will be working together as close colleagues to ensure that our party goes on to further electoral success. I am delighted that both Vince and Chris are going to be part of my top team over the coming years.

“We have a golden opportunity for our party. Gordon Brown presides over an increasingly stale, incompetent, and desperate government. David Cameron and the Tories don’t know what they stand for anymore.

“We know what we stand for: a more Liberal Britain. I am confident that with hard work and dedication we can turn our beliefs into reality and change our country for the better.

“Under my leadership our party will be a self-confident, radical, and energetic party. Together we can break the stifling two-party system and change Britain for good. That is my aim. I hope you will join me in making it a reality.”

Chris Huhne said,

“We’ve elected a leader who is going to take us from strength to strength. Good luck Nick, congratulations and God’s speed. It was a hugely close contest, and working together as a Party, we have every right to be optimist for the future – Britain’s liberal future.”

Councillor Gordon Birtwistle will lead a Candle Light Vigil outside Burnley’s Accident and Emergency unit tonight, from 7:00pm, in protest at tomorrows “downgrading” of the unit to an Urgent Care Center.

Gordon Birtwistle has been against the loss of the Accident and Emergency unit at Burnley General Hospital since the proposal was first unveiled, and has organised a number of protests, including a recent 12 hour vigil, where over 400 people pledged their support, and over 200 people have signed up to Gordon’s “STOP THE CUTS to Burnley General Hospital” group on the social networking site, Facebook.

From November 1st, 2007, all “Blue Light” emergencies will have to travel to Blackburn, 13 miles away from Burnley General Hospital on Casterton Avenue, and “walking wounded” will be treated in Burnley.

The Government’s Environment Agency has given a damning verdict on the Labour County Council’s plans to build Unity College on playing fields adjacent to Mary Townley Fold.

Mr Allen Harris of Mitella Street asked Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies to take the matter up on behalf of Brunshaw and Fulledge residents. The Environment Agency said, “We would advise against any building on a site like that!”

Chris, who is the Lib Dems’ environment spokesman in Europe, obtained the advice from the Environment Agency’s Director of Water Management after Chris saw the site for himself. He said, “The ground was obviously badly waterlogged, over three feet deep in places. It was more like a lake. I’m worried about where all the water is going to go when it rains after the site is covered in concrete and tarmac.”

Cllr John Jones wades through the proposed site

The people of Brunshaw, with backing from Allen Harris and the Liberal Democrats, have won in their bid to get a Public Enquiry on the location of Towneley’s new superschool.
Education is the responsbility of the Labour-run County Council. But the County Council wants to use a site partly owned by Burnley Borough Council. Since taking control of Burnley, the Lib Dems have listened to public pressure, and refused to sell to the Labour-run County Council the land needed to move Towneley High School onto the playing fields in Towneley Park.

But Labour have vowed that the school will go ahead, making it an election issue.

As a result, the Labour County Council has asked for a Compulsory Purchase Order to force Burnley to sell the land. But the Secretary of State has ordered that there be a Public Enquiry before any such sale takes place. This means that the public will have the opportunity to make their views known to a judge before the decision is made.

Local resident Ms SD said, “The school should be replaced, but on the site that it now exists on. It should not be built on the proposed site as it is cutting into the lovely grounds surrounding Towneley Park and is going to put a lot of heavy traffic in the area.”

Lib Dem worker Allen Harris offered his support. “I agree with the local residents. The investment in our schools is badly needed, but we have to make sure the money is wisely spent.”

Labour are believed to be backing the playing fields site.
