The Government’s Environment Agency has given a damning verdict on the Labour County Council’s plans to build Unity College on playing fields adjacent to Mary Townley Fold.

Mr Allen Harris of Mitella Street asked Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies to take the matter up on behalf of Brunshaw and Fulledge residents. The Environment Agency said, “We would advise against any building on a site like that!”

Chris, who is the Lib Dems’ environment spokesman in Europe, obtained the advice from the Environment Agency’s Director of Water Management after Chris saw the site for himself. He said, “The ground was obviously badly waterlogged, over three feet deep in places. It was more like a lake. I’m worried about where all the water is going to go when it rains after the site is covered in concrete and tarmac.”

The people of Brunshaw, with backing from Allen Harris and the Liberal Democrats, have won in their bid to get a Public Enquiry on the location of Towneley’s new superschool.
Education is the responsbility of the Labour-run County Council. But the County Council wants to use a site partly owned by Burnley Borough Council. Since taking control of Burnley, the Lib Dems have listened to public pressure, and refused to sell to the Labour-run County Council the land needed to move Towneley High School onto the playing fields in Towneley Park.

But Labour have vowed that the school will go ahead, making it an election issue.

As a result, the Labour County Council has asked for a Compulsory Purchase Order to force Burnley to sell the land. But the Secretary of State has ordered that there be a Public Enquiry before any such sale takes place. This means that the public will have the opportunity to make their views known to a judge before the decision is made.

Local resident Ms SD said, “The school should be replaced, but on the site that it now exists on. It should not be built on the proposed site as it is cutting into the lovely grounds surrounding Towneley Park and is going to put a lot of heavy traffic in the area.”

Lib Dem worker Allen Harris offered his support. “I agree with the local residents. The investment in our schools is badly needed, but we have to make sure the money is wisely spent.”

Labour are believed to be backing the playing fields site.

The Liberal Democrats are first off the mark in declaring their candidate for the Brunshaw seat.

Brunshaw resident Allen Harris has been selected for Brunshaw by the Liberal Democrats. Allen said that he would be campaigning for action on the things the Brunshaw community cares about. He said, “Much of the community feels angry and let down by Labour. The Labour County Council has chosen a site for the Towneley High School replacement in collusion with their Burnley Labour colleagues, ignoring local views.”

“The Lib Dems promised action to fight the plans last year and came through on their promise.

“To site a modern school building in Towneley Park, on open playing fields that are prone to flooding is at the very least questionable. Towneley High School could and should be replaced on the existing site with a school that the whole town can be proud of.”

The decision about where to build the school is now going through a complex legal process, because the Lib Dems refused to sell land on which it would be built to the Labour County Council. The Lib Dems said that it would affect the local area with noise, traffic and litter. They were also worried that the change of land use could cause the flooding of nearby homes and that permanent wetlands could be a safety hazard for the children. They said that County engineers had left these problems unsolved. As a result, the County Council is taking legal measures to force the sale of land.

Allen added, “I want action on improvements for the Brunshaw ward, like access ramps to help the elderly and those with disabilities. Most of all, it’s important to vote for Lib Dems because they’re the only ones who’ve got any action on the litter that was on Burnley’s streets. Thanks to them you only have to ‘phone up or send an email and fly-tipping gets cleared in days. There’s still a long way to go but you can see for yourself that the Lib Dems have made Burnley a lot cleaner already.”

The email address to get fly-tipping cleared is streetscene@burnley.gov.uk.

A Lib Dem spokesman said that their Daneshouse with Stonyholme ward candidate would be announced shortly.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for bringing to our attention in Wednesday’s paper that £1.8m of taxpayers’ money has been spent by Lancashire Police on probing a bomb plot.

I am extremely unhappy about this situation. The threat of Al Qaeda terrorism arose during the first Gulf War, principally when US troops stationed in Saudi Arabia behaved in a drunken, lewd and lascivious fashion, ignoring local custom. The terrorists are still trying to get them off holy land.

The UK’s Labour government, including Jack Straw MP, has made the problem worse with a second war, declared illegal by the UN Secretary General. Tens of thousands, possibly over a hundred thousand Iraqi innocents have been killed. This is as if a town the size of Burnley had been destroyed with all inhabitants slaughtered. It should be no surprise that some people from the region are driven to retaliate.

Bringing this home, the local people of Lancashire pay a lot for services that are sometimes cut to the bare minimum because of financial restraints. We wanted our police to fight anti-social behaviour, not terrorism. I hope that on this occasion, the full costs will be met not by the Lancashire council tax payer, but by the Treasury.

Bill Bennett, Queensgate ward Councillor Burnley.
