Councillor Gordon Birtwistle will lead a Candle Light Vigil outside Burnley’s Accident and Emergency unit tonight, from 7:00pm, in protest at tomorrows “downgrading” of the unit to an Urgent Care Center.

Gordon Birtwistle has been against the loss of the Accident and Emergency unit at Burnley General Hospital since the proposal was first unveiled, and has organised a number of protests, including a recent 12 hour vigil, where over 400 people pledged their support, and over 200 people have signed up to Gordon’s “STOP THE CUTS to Burnley General Hospital” group on the social networking site, Facebook.

From November 1st, 2007, all “Blue Light” emergencies will have to travel to Blackburn, 13 miles away from Burnley General Hospital on Casterton Avenue, and “walking wounded” will be treated in Burnley.
