Campaigners across Burnley and Padiham have been busy making sure that the borough really is Cleaner, Greener and Safer by looking out for Grot Spots, and either reporting them to Streetscene, and making sure that the area is cleaned up, or by doing it themselves.

In Gannow, campaigner Justin Birtwistle has recently made sure that two Grot Spots near Dickson Street were cleaned up….

Whilst walking through the area, looking for issues that needed sorting out, Justin came across an empty property with a back yard full of rubbish, and a patch of land that had been used for Fly tipping. Rubbish was everywhere, so Justin immediately called Streetscene to make sure that the area would be cleaned up.

Several days later, Justin returned to check on the area, and Streetscene have cleared out all the rubbish.

It’s no surprise that Burnley Council has gone from classified as “Poor” when it comes to clearing up Fly Tipping and prosecuting offenders, to “Highly Effective”, under Lib Dem leadership.

Over in Burnley Wood, local champion, Karen Hesseltine, is not content with running a massively popular campaign to save her local Post Office, she has also helped to organise a Clean-Up of the area, with a Community Skip provided by Burnley Borough Council.

Karen, who helps run the Dall Street Residents Association in Burnley Wood, helped to arrange for the skip to be in the area so that residents could clean up rubbish from the streets, parks and back yards, and also allow those that don’t have transport to remove rubbish that is not normally collected.

Karen is hoping to make these clean-up’s a regular occasion, and if today was anything to go by, it’s going to be a very popular move!
