Apprentice Ambassador, Gordon Birtwistle MP, took time out from the Liberal Democrats annual conference in Glasgow to meet young construction apprentices at the Carillion training centre in Bishopbriggs.
The Bishopbriggs centre provides apprenticeships in general construction operations and is operated through a joint venture with Training Initiatives Generating Effective Results Scotland (TIGERS), and last year celebrated its 500th modern apprenticeship in Scotland.
Mr. Birtwistle began his own working life as an apprentice and is now the Lib Dem spokesman for apprenticeships.
During the visit Mr Birtwistle met with training centre staff and was briefed on the courses provided at the centre and spoke to some of the apprentices.
Speaking after the visit Mr. Birtwistle said: “As a former apprentice I know the importance of apprenticeships in helping young people onto the career ladder and businesses to find the skilled workforce which is vital for their future success. I was very pleased to have the opportunity to visit Carillion’s training centre and impressed with the training they offer and the enthusiasm of the young people I met.”
Chris James Operations Director Carillion Training Services said: “We were delighted to be able to host a visit by Mr Birtwistle and provide an insight into how Carillion is providing the skilled and trained workforce which will be the future of the construction industry.”
