The latest figures for unemployment in Burnley and Padiham are encouraging with a fall of one third in those unemployed in the area. Even better is the drop in youth unemployment, with 42% fewer people aged 16-24 out of work or education than in May 2010.
Burnley and Padiham MP Gordon Birtwistle is the government spokesman for apprenticeships. Gordon has worked to increase the number of apprenticeships available to young people and there are now over 1.7 million new apprentices across the country as a result. The number in Burnley has more than doubled to over 3,800 since Gordon was elected in 2010.
“I was an apprentice myself after school,” Gordon said, “And I know just how much difference it can make to a young person’s life. It gives you a career and the skills employers need. With all of the investments in Burnley and Padiham’s business infrastructure, we owe it to our future to train up young people to be able to do the jobs which these businesses will bring to our town over the next 5 and 10 years.”
